Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Lemons into lemonade: The saying goes that when you’re handed lemons, make lemonade. That’s what Leeanne Smith and her son Rean, age five, did after Rean began being bullied because of his long hair. Rean, of Sunderland, England, had never cut his hair, and his long, blond locks were quite lovely. But, when the youngster started school, the taunts began. He and his mom took action and decided that Rean would cut his hair, but they would turn the event into a fundraiser for the local hospital. Rean asked his friends and family to sponsor him, and he managed to raise $500. His mom says Rean “is over the moon” with the success of the fundraiser – and the haircut.

False alarm: Officers with the Scottish SPCA’s Aberdeen unit had a chuckle when they answered a distress call from a woman who thought she had a five-foot snake in her loft. When they arrived on the scene and had a closer look, they saw that it wasn’t a real snake but rather a draft excluder – a long, snake-shaped object designed to keep drafts from coming in under doors. Animal rescue officer Karen Hogg reports that the woman, who was renting the property, was very upset but calmed down when she learned the ‘snake’ was harmless.

Palm intelligence: In Taiyuan, in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi, authorities have forbidden three kindergartens from administering palm reading tests on children as a way to predict their intelligence and academic potential. Fortunetelling and palm readings are taken seriously in China and, considering the one-child law, parents will go to great lengths to ensure their child’s success, even paying $190 for a palm reading done by a school. Ma Zhaoxing, Taiyuan’s education bureau chief, explains that his department issued a notice saying the palm readings must stop and deemed them superstition. They’ve also launched an investigation into fraud.

Pass the gravy: There is a crazy competition held in Stacksteads, England, that involves wrestlers and gravy. Held in August, this relatively new event – which originated in 2008 – is a fun competition featuring pairs of participants who wrestle each other for two minutes in a pool filled with gravy. The winner is the competitor who receives the most applause and laughs from the audience. Competitors are expected to dress up, and there is a prize for the best costume. Also, wrestling skill is not a prerequisite. Instead, competitors must have a sense of humor. Best of all, all money raised goes to charity.
