Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Not fooling: When Karla Noriega’s six-year-old son was driving his toy motorcycle, he accidentally ran into a real vehicle. A policeman witnessed the incident and cracked down on the pint-sized driver, charging him with reckless driving, driving without a license and driving an unregistered vehicle. He also impounded the bike. The incident happened in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez. Noriega was further outraged when she discovered she would have to pay $183 in fines to get the toy back. Media publicity soon prompted a change of heart, however. According to city council secretary Hector Arceluz, the authorities dropped the fines and returned the toy motorcycle to the boy.

Easy listening: A study conducted at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England, showed that patients who are awake during surgery are calmer and cope better with their recovery when music is played during their operation. Hazim Sadideen, who led the study, says 96 patients were tested. Music was played for half the operations and it was quiet for the other half. Patients who listened to music during the operation had more regular breathing, averaging 11 breaths per minute, compared to 13 breaths in the non-music group. Sadideen points out that undergoing surgery can be stressful and that it’s important to find ways to reduce that stress for patients.

Strange momma: In Columbia, a city in Alabama, four kittens found an unusual momma. They snuggled up and nursed from Molly, a white English bulldog. The dog, who already had three newborn puppies, took over after the kittens’ mother died. The pet’s owner, Elbert Bristow, is still marveling at how quickly Molly assumed the mothering duties for the kittens. He points out that normally cats and dogs are natural enemies. He explained that this was the first time he’d ever seen a dog take over a litter of kittens. He kept the pups and kittens separated during nursing sessions.

Big debt: Back in 1562, the eastern German town of Mittenwalde was a seat of power, and it loaned Berlin 400 guilders, to be repaid at six percent interest annually. The debt was never repaid, but every 50 years, Mittenwalde, now a sleepy little hamlet, makes an official request to Berlin to repay the money, which would now amount to 11,200 guilders (about $137 million U.S.). Adjust for compound interest and inflation and it adds up to trillions of dollars. Town historian Vera Schmidt claims that the debt document was examined by authorities in 1893 and found to be authentic.
