Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Smart guy: Brock Erdahl is one smart guy. He spent four years studying at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, and walked away with a quadruple major and a 4.0 grade point average. Erdahl earned bachelor’s degrees in history, political science, global culture/language studies, and Catholic studies with a French minor. He says he was very careful when choosing courses and managed his time extremely well to achieve his feat. It didn’t hurt that he liked the university so much that he didn’t want to leave. His history professor, Randall Poole, reports that he’s never had a student like Erdahl.

Long life: Canadian teenager Jenelle Tam has discovered that tree pulp could be the secret to anti-aging. Tam, who came to the Canadian city of Waterloo, Ontario, from Singapore, won a national science award for her discovery in a recent Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge. Judges were from Canada’s National Research Council and other major science institutions. Tam says the same woody material that makes trees durable, flexible, and stronger than steel (nano-crystalline cellulose) is also a potent antioxidant, which is a key to anti-aging. She envisions the product being available in tablet form and added to things like cosmetic creams.

Sleepy youth: A study in England has shown that about two-thirds of children aren’t getting enough sleep to function well at school. Children used to get a bedtime story, but now they fall asleep watching television or playing computer games. Older children stay up late because they’re on the computer or texting their friends. The study, conducted for Travelodge, revealed that 9:30 PM is the average bedtime for six-year-olds, while that of teens is close to midnight. Sleep Council spokesperson Jan Turner reports that the study’s findings echo the results of a Council study. There is great concern that the lack of sleep is having a devastating impact on young people.

Population control: In Hong Kong, wild monkeys are becoming a nuisance because they chase hikers and want to steal their food. It’s illegal to feed the animals and offenders can face a steep fine. That’s why city officials launched a monkey birth control program, and after four years in operation, the program has been successful. The primate population has been lowered by 15 percent. Conservation officials report that they have treated about 70 percent of the population with various birth control methods. Microchips were implanted in the monkeys to monitor them following fertility control procedures.

Rocky matters: Rock comes in many forms. Rock that has solidified from molten material is called igneous rock. Shale is a form of sedimentary rock that has narrow layers and is formed from clay, mud, or silt.

Vibrant solution: The many colours of flowers can inspire people to plant them in their gardens, but there is another reason behind this natural beauty. Colour, as well as scent, attracts bees and other insects, which aid in pollination.

Odd veggie: Lo bok is a large, oriental vegetable common in Korean cuisine. Native to East Asia, it looks like a fat carrot, except that it is pale green or creamy white in colour. Lo bok tastes somewhat like a mild red radish.

Big hearted: Since the blue whale is Earth’s largest creature, it makes sense that it would have a big heart. This whale’s blood pumping muscle is the size of two refrigerators!

Ocean history: The first living things started to develop in the ocean over three billion years ago. Today, oceans are still central to life as more than half of all humans on Earth rely on them for food.

On the Lighter Side

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Len: “My Saint Bernard likes to eat fish.”
Jen: “What do you feed him?”
Len: “Holy mackerels.”

Did you hear about the firefly who won the million-dollar lottery? He’s one happy-glow-lucky bug!

Fran: “Is it true that your cat had a litter?”
Jan: “Not really. She swallowed a ball of yarn and gave birth to a pair of mittens.”

Never believe anybody who tries to prove something with statistics: 83.5 percent of them are completely made up.

A mother told her son that his shoes were on the wrong feet. The little boy looked perplexed. “They’re the only ones I’ve got,” he said.

One potato chip to another potato chip: “Want to go for a dip?”
