Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Loyal dog: When truck driver Michael Siau stopped at a rest area in Hannibal, Missouri (US), he didn’t realize his canine companion, Rambo, had jumped from the truck, as well. Siau headed onto the highway again, figuring Rambo was in the cab snoozing. Siau was 170 miles down the road before he realized Rambo wasn’t in his truck, but he had to keep on driving so he could make his delivery. Two days later he found Rambo by phoning various animal control branches. Turns out Rambo had stayed at the rest area patiently waiting for Siau to return. Siau says he’s glad Rambo is such a loyal pooch.

High-tech seniors: Getting in touch with Grandma or Grandpa has never been easier for British young people. According to a study done by the family pub restaurant chain Fayre & Square, more and more seniors are using social media to communicate with their loved ones. The study showed that 15 percent of grandparents use Facebook to update everyone on their activities, while five percent use Twitter. One in 10 uses Skype to converse with family members. Email and text messaging are routine for many of them. Fayre & Square spokesperson Sally Wainwright suggests that it’s encouraging to know that many grandparents are staying in touch by modern technology.

Harrowing ride: A German grandmother of three prevented a bus from plummeting down a 20 ft. cliff when she took over the wheel from the unconscious bus driver. Senior Martha Becker was on the bus with her friends for a holiday trip to Austria. When Becker realized the bus, which was traveling at about 37 miles per hour, was veering off the road, she managed to take the wheel, access the brakes, and steer it to safety. The driver was taken to the hospital for observation and a replacement bus came to continue the journey to the Austrian destination.

Windfall: When Nicholas Newlife died, the British resident left his entire estate to the charity Oxfam. It might have been a modest gift if not for an unusual bet Newlife had made while still alive, with the winning of that bet becoming part of his estate. Among some outstanding bets he’d placed, he wagered that Swiss tennis player Roger Federer would win Wimbledon seven times before 2020. Federer won his seventh Wimbledon in 2012. Bookie Graham Sharpe of William Hill Online Betting paid out over £100,000 pounds ($1,603,450 US) to Oxfam, claiming it was a gift that was meant to be.
