Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Bank Heist: Police in Germany are at a loss as to the identity of some very smart criminals. It seems that a group of knowledgeable and professional robbers managed to gain access to a safety deposit room in a Berlin bank by digging a tunnel, which began in a nearby parking garage. The tunnel was well-constructed and had supports to ensure safety, and police think it would have taken many weeks to secretly complete. Once the thieves finished their work, they set a fire to cover up any clues of the robbery. It was the smoke from the fire that alerted a security guard to the situation.

Bad Landlord: All Laura Evelyn wanted was a place to live. What she got was a long list of ridiculous house rules. Evelyn was looking for shared accommodation in north London, England, and she went to view a flat that was advertised. Everything looked good, until the landlord, who also lived in the flat, produced his list of expectations. While no loud music or parties seemed like normal rules, most of the rest of the demands were a little less than acceptable, such as giving a two-week notice to get permission to have an overnight guest and forbidding pork in the fridge or house. Needless to say, Evelyn said “No” and decided to continue her search.

Police Car Adventure: A would-be car thief probably should have chosen a different vehicle to steal. Vanessa Brooks of St. Petersburg, Florida (US) stole a police cruiser that had been called to her home to investigate a domestic dispute. Brooks waited until the officers were busy interviewing people in the apartment, then she slipped outside and stopped a passing motorist. After grabbing the driver’s cell phone, she ran away, with the driver in hot pursuit. At that point, Brooks jumped into the waiting police car and took off. She was eventually caught in a nearby city and arrested.

Oil Alert: Most people know that fried food isn’t the greatest choice for their diets because it can contribute to high blood pressure and high cholesterol, leading to heart disease. However, a study done by researchers at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain revealed that the type of oil used for frying makes a difference. They surveyed 40,757 Spanish adults over an 11-year period about diet and food preparation. They could not link the participants’ diets to a higher risk of heart disease. They attribute this to the fact that unsaturated olive oil or sunflower oil were commonly used in cooking, as opposed to alternatives such as palm oil, lard or butter, which are saturated fats.
