Rich cat: When an wealthy elderly lady in Rome passed away, she had no family to leave her fortune of over $13 million. Maria Assunta did not have any children and her husband had already passed away. Before she died, she decided that her beloved cat, Tommaso, should receive her money. Assunta tried to find a shelter that would look after the feline, but she was not convinced any of them were good enough for her Tommaso. So, she gave trusteeship to a nurse she had met in the park. The nurse had become Assunta’s caregiver and friend, and Assunta trusted her to ensure Tommaso would be properly cared for.
Young driver: When police officers in Germany pulled over an expensive Mercedes and found a 13-year-old boy driving it, they were quite surprised. The teenager, an expert go-cart driver, was heading to Poland from Pederobba, a small town in northern Italy, where he lives with his adoptive parents. The boy’s birth parents and birth sister live in Poland and he wanted to go for a visit. He had been driving for almost 24 hours before he was stopped near Leipzig, Germany, over 600 miles from his home. The boy apologized to his adoptive parents for his misadventure.
Ride the rails: In Canada, the rail line that carries passengers is called VIA Rail. A man in the city of Vaughan near Toronto, Ontario, loves VIA passenger cars so much that he built one in his basement. Jason Shron spent 2,500 hours over the course of almost five years working in his basement to reconstruct the car. Shron, a collector of VIA Rail memorabilia, bought an old car (coach 5647) and, with the help of friends, refurbished it – an undertaking that cost $10,000. Shron has many fond memories of riding VIA Rail in the 1970s and 1980s between Toronto and Montreal, Quebec (CAN).
Swedish sleep: People who want to make sure their deceased loved ones can listen to music during their ‘long sleep’ should contact Fredrik Hjelmquist of Sweden. As owner of a music and video equipment store, Hjelmquist got the idea to design a funeral coffin complete with audio speakers. Music can then be piped in from a playlist that relatives can change if they think their loved one is getting bored with the musical selections. Hjelmquist explains that no one really knows if the dead might be able to hear and appreciate music from their final resting place, so why not give it a chance? So far, he’s had lots of calls, but no buyers.
