Everybody’s Talking

Moving fast:
If you’re in a car and you see a tornado coming towards you, try backing up – fast! That’s what two Australian men did when they were on the highway traveling from Mulwala to Barooga in New South Wales. As the black cloud of the tornado advanced towards them, the two men saw power lines explode while debris flew all around their vehicle. The 50-metre-wide (164 ft.) force of nature touched down and traveled alongside the car at about 50 mph. The driver was able to get turned around, but it was a close call for both men.

Too fast:
There is a very steep hill in Cape Town, South Africa that was the scene of a very fast skateboarding stunt that got the skateboarder into a lot of trouble with the authorities. Decio Lourenco, who is one of the country’s top competitive skateboarders, went down a road called Kloof Nek, which is sometimes closed to traffic for boarding events. However, when Lourenco did his stunt, vehicles were using the road. A friend followed in a car and filmed the adventure, during which a speed camera flashed Lourenco doing 68 mph in a 37 mph zone. Whoops! That’s speeding all right. Laurenco and his friend may face charges of reckless driving.

Photo spree:
A couple in Toronto, Ontario (CAN) is trying to keep alive the knowledge of old-fashioned photography, which used cameras with film that had to be developed. In today’s era of digital photography, Chris Hughes and his wife, Grace, decided to search for old cameras they could display at their downtown shop, A Nerd’s World. They now have over 250 old cameras, some dating back to the early 1900s. They found the cameras in odd places, such as flea markets and antique shops. Sometimes, the film inside the cameras had not been developed, so they were the first to see decades-old shots of soldiers at war or families on vacation.

Precarious portraits:
One would not think that being an artist could be a dangerous occupation, but Ahn Jun of South Korea decided to take on a project that would make most people cringe with fear. Using a timer on her camera, Jun took pictures of herself on tall buildings in different cities, such as Seoul, Hong Kong and New York. In the photos, she is shown leaning out of a window many stories up or sitting on a ledge and looking down at the street below with her feet dangling over the ledge. Jun calls the collection of dazzlingly, yet frightening, photographs “Self-Portrait.” She says the photos are real and that she has not altered them digitally.
