Everybody’s Talking

Oh, deer! People have dogs, cats, birds, gerbils and even snakes for pets, but how about a pet deer that sleeps in a bed at night? That is the case for Janet Schwartz of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Schwartz has looked after the deer, named Bimbo, since it was a tiny fawn. For 10 years, Bimbo has been allowed in the house and Schwartz feeds it goat’s milk. Conservation officers wanted to remove the deer, claiming that it is a wild animal, but with ongoing support from a local veterinarian, Schwartz is being allowed to keep her strange pet.

Chilly recess: Siberia, Russia is known for being quite cold in the winter and the kids in kindergarten classes in the cities of Krasnoyarsk and Barnaul know exactly how cold it is. At elementary schools there, children go outside in freezing winter temperatures for a 90-second romp in the snow wearing only bathing suits. Then, they pour cold water over their heads. According to the teachers, the practice helps to boost immunity so the students end up healthier. Apparently, the children love it. No child is forced to participate and parents can opt out if desired.

Outdoor school: For many children in the world’s developing countries, a good education is simply not available, and being able to read and write is just a dream. A shopkeeper in New Delhi, India, is trying to change that for some poor children in the area. For two hours a day, Kumar Sharma leaves his shop and goes to his makeshift classroom located under a bridge. There, he gives lessons to dozens of kids who range in age from 4 to 12, and he does this without being paid. Providing the kids with basic reading, writing and math skills helps them be admitted to government schools in the future.

Underwater paradise: Keep your eye on Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. That is the location of a future underwater hotel, an ambitious construction project, indeed. The hotel, which is in the design stages, will be called the Water Discus Hotel. The name comes from the fact it will be comprised of two round disks, one under the water and one above, and everything would be connected. Planned for the underwater section are 21 double rooms, a dive centre and a bar, and guests would be able to enjoy underwater sea vistas through wall-to-wall windows. The upper level will have a spa, a pool and gardens.
