Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Great talent: Just because someone is born with a disability doesn’t mean they won’t be successful in their endeavours. Take the case of the late Paul Smith of Roseburg, Oregon (US) who passed away in 2009. Born with cerebral palsy, he was able to develop a great talent for making pictures using a typewriter. He would steady his right hand with his left hand, using typewriter symbols to create images, such as animals, trains, trucks, seascapes and portraits. As his talent grew over the years, the techniques he developed made his work look almost like charcoal drawings. Smith left his legacy in his art.
Prison break: A Canadian penitentiary not far from Montreal, Quebec, was the scene of a prison break in which two inmates grabbed ropes attached to a waiting helicopter. Two accomplices had hijacked the helicopter after pretending to book it for a sightseeing trip. Pilot Sébastien Foray had no choice but to follow the directions of the accomplices. Once away from the prison, Foray was forced to land in a field so the dangling convicts could board. He was told to take the group to a rural area where they jumped out and took off. It only took a few hours for police to track them down and re-arrest the foursome.
Picture perfect: There are lots of different mediums for artists to work in, but Diego Fazo of Italy has chosen one of the more common ones–a charcoal pencil. But, despite the simplicity of the medium, there is definitely nothing simple about Fazo’s art. He draws images, such as a woman with wet hair or a frowning man’s face, that look exactly like photographs. His images are so realistic that some viewers can’t believe they are not photos. Faze can prove it, though, by showing his work in progress. This talented man started as a tattoo artist and later taught himself charcoal drawing.
Strange coin: The Kenyan island of Manda, which lies off the east coast of that country, may have been a key trade link between China and Africa six centuries ago. This theory has come to light because scientists discovered a coin on Manda that bears the name of Emperor Yongle, who reigned in China in the 1400s. The American researchers, who are from the Field Museum in Chicago and the University of Illinois, report that the coin provides evidence that trade between these areas started well before European explorers came on the scene. The coin is made of silver and copper and has a square hole in the middle through which a belt can be worn.

Fast flight: The Concorde was a commercial jet that was in use from 1976 to 2003. It was the first to fly regular passengers at a speed faster than the speed of sound. The Concorde was retired because of economic factors at the time.
True story: The 1975 movie Breakout, which starred Charles Bronson, was based on the true story of Joel David Kaplan’s escape from a Mexican jail in 1971. He had been convicted of murder. Kaplan wrote a book about his prison break.
Time for a swim: The hippopotamus enjoys submerging itself in water to keep cool. These large mammals are great swimmers and are able to stay under the water for about five minutes or longer before coming up for air.
Apple mania: Many varieties of apples are available on the market. Those who want to bake an apple pie or apple crisp might want to use Granny Smith or MacIntosh apples. For juicing, the sweet, mildly tart Red Delicious apple is a good bet.
Plastic inventor: These days, plastic is everywhere, but that was not always the case. The first plastic made entirely from man-made materials was called Bakelite, named after Leo H. Baekeland, who invented it in 1909.
