Everybody’s Talking

Dog sunburn: A researcher at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, has some tips for dog owners to prevent pooches from getting a sunburn. Christa Horvath-Ungerböck says that these preventive measures are especially important for dogs that have white coats or coats that are very thin. First, keep the dog in the shade on sunny days whenever possible. If a long walk is in the plans, put sunscreen on the animal. If the walk is going to turn into a long hike, it may be necessary to have a special T-shirt made to be worn with a doggy hat. How stylish!

Wedding delay: Talk about missing your wedding! A groom from Victoria, British Columbia (CAN) ended up spending his wedding night in jail and, as an unmarried man, when police picked him up because of missed child support payments to his previous spouse. An hour before his wedding to Claire Fresneda, police took Shai Topaz into custody. The bride and guests waited for a little while for Topaz to show up, and when he didn’t, they tracked him down at the Victoria police station. Topaz was released the next day and the pair carried on with their plans and got married.

Sod thief: Most thieves go for jewelry, money, mountain bikes or stereo equipment, but not Maureen McKenna of Skelmersdale, Lancashire, England. She goes for the sod on her victim’s lawn. She and an accomplice were caught on a neighbour’s closed circuit camera going back and forth several times to pick up pieces of sod. The pair was so nonchalant about their actions that they even stopped for a smoke break in the middle of the heist. The video footage was used to identify McKenna, who was given a three-month jail sentence for her crime.

No barking: Over five million people live in the city of Singapore, China. As well, the population density is quite high, with many people living in apartments. Because of these close quarters, it is important that both owners and their dogs are courteous to other tenants in the buildings. So, when complaints about neighbours’ barking dogs started to increase, city officials asked dog owners to think about debarking their pets, which involves a controversial operation. Many people disagreed with the idea, especially animal welfare groups. The city backed down and now pet owners are being asked to better train their pooches.
