Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Kicking the habit: In Central Java, Indonesia, Tori, the orangutan, is trying to kick her smoking habit. Zoo officials at Taman Satwa Taru Jurug have decided to send the animal to rehab in the hopes she’ll throw away the cigarettes for good. Daniel Hendanto explained that Tori picked up the habit after visitors to the zoo began throwing cigarettes inside her cage. She is a natural imitator and quickly got hooked. Her rehab will take place in an isolated area of the zoo, away from her enablers. The orangutan doesn’t smoke the entire cigarette, and zoo workers have to put the cigarettes out with water.

Flexible granny: Johanna Quaas enjoys doing gymnastics “just for fun” and practices daily. That is pretty impressive, considering that she is in her eighties. The senior from Haile, Germany, is a retired sports teacher. In recent years, she has won 11 gymnastics medals in seniors’ competitions. She uses her arms to hold her body flat on a balance bar and she does handstands, cartwheels and headstands, all of which are easy for the physically-fit Quaas. She decided to stop competing because the majority of her competitors were a lot younger, with most being in their seventies.

Picasso found: It’s not something normally seen when out for a leisurely walk, but a resident in Novato, California came across a $30,000 Pablo Picasso lithograph propped against a fence on a road near the entrance to a hiking trail. According to Novato police sergeant Eric Riddell, it turns out that the lithograph had been stolen by a group of out-of-control party-goers, who ransacked a nearby house owned by the former Ukrainian prime minister, Pavlo Lazarenko. Riddell speculates that the thieves left the painting in an obvious spot so it would be found. Lazarenko, who is in prison on money- laundering charges, also had $5,000 worth of computers stolen.

Interesting experiment: The village of Pince in north-western France intends to embark on an interesting experiment involving chickens. The plan is to give two chickens to each household that signs up. This is in an attempt to reduce organic waste generated by the people living in the home. The expectation is that the chickens will consume about 330 pounds of waste a year. Not only that, but they’ll provide fresh eggs for the family. Lydie Pasteau is mayor of Pince and admits that the idea began as a joke, but then became a serious proposal. She explains that it is a good investment because it is a way to reduce the cost of waste disposal.
