Everybody’s Talking

Out for a stroll: Nik Wallenda, a 33-year-old German daredevil, took a tightrope walk across Niagara Falls. The 550-metre (1800 ft.) walk took him from the U.S. side to the Canadian side of the falls, suspended 46 metres (200 ft.) above the water. It was the first time this stunt had been performed in 100 years. The cost of creating and installing the wire, permits, and security was around $1.3 million.

Big jump: Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner jumped from 18 miles above the earth, reaching speeds of 536 mph during the dive. His goal is to jump from 23 miles and break the sound barrier. He wore a pressure suit and was lifted into the atmosphere by a giant helium balloon.

Rooftop bees: Austrian beekeeper Felix Munk places beehives on city rooftops to save bees from pesticides and viruses in rural areas. The hives thrive in cities, where there are plenty of flowers and less risk of harm.

Unhappy customer: A man from East Hartford, Connecticut, called 911 after receiving a sandwich he didn’t like at a deli. Although the dispatcher told him not to buy it, no charges were filed as the situation was resolved.

Cave adventure: There is a group of adventurers in the world who, instead of climbing mountains, explore caves. The study and exploration of caves is known as speleology.

Jimmy: “Great news–the teacher says we have a test today, come rain or shine.”
Timmy: “So, what’s so great about that?”
Jimmy: “It’s snowing outside!”
