Everybody’s Talking

Captive Audience: Sitting in her favourite local restaurant one day in 1987, Winnipeg resident Jean Daum found herself bored with nothing to read while waiting for her order. She began reading little paper sugar packets that were on the table and soon realized that there were probably thousands of restaurant patrons in her hometown who’d enjoy some light reading, as well, while waiting for their breakfast, lunch or dinner to arrive. That moment sparked the creation of Coffee News®, which she began publishing shortly thereafter. Today, Coffee News® is the world’s largest restaurant publication, delivered each week by hundreds of local Coffee News® franchisees and enjoyed in more than 30 international countries.

Think Positive: Dr. Maryanne Garry and Dr. Robert Michael, two psychologists at New Zealand’s University of Victoria, have conducted a study showing that there truly is power in positive thinking. According to Garry, if you tell yourself you are going to accomplish something because you have what it takes to achieve success, then your subsequent thoughts and actions will serve to help bring about that outcome. Even simply being observed by someone else is enough optimistic influence to do well. Garry claims that even by just making someone feel special is often enough to push them towards success.

Belated Diploma: Ann Lupica Colagiovanni always wished she had a high school diploma, but at 97 years of age, it was doubtful that would happen. Then, Mark Freeman, the school superintendent in Shaker Heights, Ohio (US) decided to make her wish come true; he presented her with an honorary diploma. She donned a cap and gown and received the diploma privately, with just a few friends and family looking on. “I’m a graduate,” she declared once she had the paper in hand. Colagiovanni left school at age 17 to help her father run his meat market and never had the opportunity to go back and complete her education.

Money Bag: Some men who were digging a foundation for a building in Bavaria in Germany came across something besides stones and dirt. They found a strange-looking bag, and when they opened it, they realized it was full of money – 100,000 Deutsche Marks. Although this currency has since been replaced by the Euro, it is still possible to exchange it, and it could be worth 50,000 Euros (nearly $65,000 US). The landowner and labourers are claiming the money, but paperwork in the bag may be used to track down the true owner of the stash. If that happens, the workers might be entitled to a ‘finder’s fee.’
