Apple racing: Here’s a weird way to raise money. Buy an apple, race it down a river, and give the money to charity. This is an actual event that occurs each fall in Huonville in Tasmania, Australia. Racers are encouraged to buy an apple at a price of $3. Then, competitors launch their apples from a bridge over the Huon River. The tagged apples float 327 yards to the finish line, and whoever owns the apple that crosses first wins. The race is the brainchild of the Rotary Club of Huon Valley, which uses the money for charity.
Not popular: The little dogs that are carried around in the handbags of celebrities are making the lovely and iconic Old English Sheepdog almost a thing of the past. The U.K. Kennel Club reports that the number of sheepdogs being registered in Britain is dropping each year. Recent figures indicate 316 puppy registrations, and anything below 300 is deemed vulnerable. Meanwhile, small dogs such as the Chihuahua and pugs are growing in popularity. Bill Lambert of the Kennel Club speculates that today’s society doesn’t have time to commit to the grooming and exercise sheepdogs require. Fashion also plays into it, he suggests.
Showdown: It could become a showdown between about 200 cats and local officials protecting the architectural heritage of ancient Rome. Stray cats are a common sight among the temple ruins and a tourist attraction in their own right. However, the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary has received an eviction notice because part of the sanctuary is built on a heritage site. Officials claim that, while they love the cats, the sanctuary must find a new home.
Talking elephant: Korean-speaking visitors to the Everland Zoo in South Korea must say hello to Koshik, the elephant, who may say hello back! Koshik knows five Korean words and mimics their sounds by placing his trunk into his mouth to modify his rumble into human-like sounds.
