Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Amazing ride: They could definitely call this cat “Lucky.” The feline hitched a ride from Belfast to Londonderry in Northern Ireland, a distance of 60 miles, but he did so by riding under the hood of the car. Amazingly, the cat had only a few small scratches upon his arrival, according to Helen Davies, the director of the animal refuge caring for the cat until its owner can claim him. Car owner Gary O’Sullivan reports that he could hear a strange noise as he was driving, but never guessed it was anything but a potential mechanical problem. He was shocked when he discovered his four-legged stowaway.

Best insurance claims: John Lamerton, managing director at MobileInsurance.co.uk, a company in England that insures mobile phones, is probably still laughing over some of the insurance claims people submitted for loss or damage to their phones. He admits that he is not sure how some of them could even happen. For example, one woman baked her phone into a cake, while another claimed that a seagull plucked it from her hand. A man taking pictures of monkeys in a safari park had his phone stolen by a monkey, and another realized – too late – that his phone had fallen out of his pocket and into the toilet. The moral of these stories? Hang on tight to your mobile phones!

Earthy dress: There are birch bark canoes and furniture, but a dress made from birch bark? Well, it’s not actually wearable, but it is clothing and it was designed by Jessica Tenczar, a junior at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, Massachusetts (US). She made the dress for an assignment requiring students to do a non-textile project. Skeptical friends said the bark would be too stiff and brittle, but Tenczar, who has been sewing since she was four-years-old and using a sewing machine since she was 10, said the experiment showed her that even unconventional materials can wrap around the body.

Different collision: When boaters are out at sea, they don’t expect to have any collisions, but off the coast of South Africa, that’s what happened to three men in a small boat. Their collision was with a breaching whale. The creature came out of the water and landed on their boat, plunging it and the men underwater. Ian Gray of the National Sea Rescue Institute reports that the boat was motoring slowly about a mile offshore when the incident happened. The boaters were safely rescued and had only minor injuries. South Africa is on the migratory route of humpback whales and breaching humpbacks had been spotted in the area.

Pacific chain: The famous Galápagos Islands are a chain of islands off the coast of Ecuador in South America. The chain has 13 main islands, three smaller islands and 107 rocks and islets. The largest island is called Isabela.

Famous series: French artist, Claude Monet, painted 19 canvases of the Houses of Parliament between 1900 and 1905 in London, England, showing different weather conditions and times of day. The paintings were all the same size and from the same viewpoint – a terrace at the St. Thomas Hospital.

Noodle know-how: Those who are unhappy when their pasta sauce won’t stick to cooked noodles can try this little trick: reserve a small amount of the water used to cook the pasta and stir it into the sauce. Because the cooking water contains starch, it will help bind the sauce to the noodles.

Big bird: The harpy eagle lives in tropical forests from the south of Mexico to northern Argentina and southern Brazil. It has huge talons, a wingspan of two metres (6.5 feet) and it catches monkeys and sloths for dinner.
