Polar bear scare: Svalbard, in the northern area of Arctic Norway, was the location of a terrifying encounter between man and polar bear. Gordon Buchanan, who was filming the bears for a documentary, was inside a specially-designed windowed box with his camera. The mother polar bear approached the box and tried every angle to get in. Even with all his experience studying these ferocious beasts, Buchanan had to admit to being scared, although he knew he was safe in the strong box.
Big rock: The ex-wife of the mayor of the small town of Saint-Théodore-d’Acton in Quebec, Canada, finally received the “rock” she had always wanted. However, the birthday gift was not exactly the kind of rock Isabelle Prévost had in mind. Rather, Prévost’s ex-husband, Dany Larière, delivered a 20-tonne boulder from a quarry he owns using a front-end loader. He deposited the big rock in the middle of Prévost’s driveway during the night. The unwelcome prank was done after months of arguing over the couple’s divorce settlement. To avoid problems with the law, Larière eventually removed the boulder so Prévost could use her driveway again.
Grand illusions: Visitors to the Grand Canyon in Arizona (US) can experience the beauty of the area before they actually take a hike. That’s because artist Kurt Wenner was commissioned to paint one of his famous 3-D scenes, which make viewers feel as though they are right in the painting. In the Grand Canyon scene, viewers feel like they are standing on the rim of the canyon. Wenner is known for his large-scale sidewalk art, which can be found all over the world. As an American who studied art in Rome for many years, he is credited with inventing anamorphic illusionistic art, commonly known as 3-D street painting.
Colourful igloo: A man from New Zealand impressed his girlfriend and her Canadian family when he built an igloo out of milk carton ice bricks. Canadian Kathleen Starrie was attending the University of Canterbury in New Zealand when she met local engineering student Dan Gray. Starrie brought Gray home for a visit to her Canadian city of Edmonton, Alberta, where Starrie’s mother had been collecting milk cartons for the project. Filling hundreds of the cartons with water and food colouring, Gray used the resulting frozen bricks to build a beautiful igloo that, when lit from the inside, looks like a colourful dome.
