Tying the knot: Once a year, the government in the Philippines helps couples who are unable to afford the cost of a wedding. It does this by sponsoring mass weddings in various cities around the country, during which hundreds of couples attend and participate. The couples all walk in together and listen to the words of the minister. Then, hundreds of rings get placed on fingers and an equal number of kisses get planted on lips. A meal is served and even wedding cakes are provided. Married couples are welcome, as well, to come and renew their vows. It’s quite a celebration!
Roses are red: Anyone who has ever picked up a bouquet of flowers from the florist might wonder where those flowers came from. Chances are they originated from FloraHolland, a flower trading cooperative in the Netherlands. The company moves over 12 billion plant and flower items a year, and there are over 20,000 varieties to choose from, such as roses, magnolias and tulips. Their warehouse is huge, covering the size of 400 football fields. Visitors can come and watch auctions where international trading of plants and flowers takes place, and they can smell the roses while they’re at it.
Shadow art: An artist from Holland creates sculptures out of junk. When people view the sculptures, their first thought might be that they are just a pile of garbage. However, when artist Diet Wiegman casts light from a projector onto each sculpture, the real work of art appears on the wall in the form of a shadow. At that point, viewers are amazed because the shadows depict unique images, such as singer Michael Jackson in a dance pose, Atlas carrying the celestial sphere or Michelangelo’s statue of David. Other artists also work with sculptures and shadows, but Wiegman is considered to be a pioneer in this type of art.
Sawdust magic: People who want to have a youthful look might consider a beauty treatment that is becoming quite common in Japan. It has nothing to do with creams or massages, but has everything to do with sawdust. That’s right – those using the treatment recline 15–20 minutes in fermented sawdust, which also warms the body. Proponents say that the cedar and cypress sawdust used in the treatment stimulates the body’s circulation which, among other benefits, helps to cleanse the skin.

Beating hearts: The human heart, a very strong muscle in the human body, beats 70 times per minute in the average person. However, athletes who train extensively and whose hearts are very efficient, can have resting heart rates of 28 to 40 beats per minute.
Fashion statement: Blue jeans, the ubiquitous clothing item of the world today, were invented in 1853 by a German who had immigrated to the United States. His name was Levi Strauss and he made the first pair of jeans out of rough, but strong, canvas.
Play first: The iconic movie, A Streetcar Named Desire, was based on a play written by Tennessee Williams. The play was featured on Broadway between 1947 and 1949 and starred Marlon Brando. Brando also starred in the 1951 movie adaptation.
