Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Long way down: The ultra rich who live in exclusive areas of London, England, such as Kensington and Chelsea, have started a new trend when putting additions on their homes. Instead of building up and out, they are building down. Three stories down, to be exact! These underground additions, known locally as ‘iceberg homes,’ include such luxurious extras as tennis courts, pools, garages and gyms. The problem is that their neighbours are complaining. Apparently, nearby homes are prone to shifting and sinking, causing walls to crack and damaged door jambs. Local authorities are scrambling to come up with some policies to regulate the trend.
Flash mob invite: A high school student from Aptos High School in Aptos, California (US) got the surprise of her life when an admirer asked her to the prom. However, Tim Bonanno did not make his request of Gabriella DeNike in an ordinary way. DeNike couldn’t believe her eyes (and ears) when a flash mob of students danced and held signs asking her to the prom on behalf of Bonanno, who supplied the music by playing a red electric guitar. A red rose dangled from the fretboard of the guitar, which the music-loving suitor gave to DeNike after he finished his song. DeNike agreed to be his date, but who wouldn’t after such a performance?
Feisty lady: An elderly Italian woman proved to be too much for a thief when she fought him off with her feistiness. Rina Zorzin answered a knock on her door to find a man claiming to be from the electric company who said he had come to read her meter. Zorzin told him to go away, but he forced his way in. She would not tell the thief where she kept her valuables, so he started to search for them. In the meantime, Zorzin snuck out of the house and started yelling and screaming to attract attention. At that, the thief abandoned the scene of the crime and ran away.
Noisy neighbour: Robert Thomas of Bristol, England, who continually annoyed his neighbours by being noisy, finally got what was coming to him – a six month community order, during which he has to report to a supervisor and change the behaviour that caused the distress to others. If he breaks the rules of his order, he could end up with a more serious sentence. His neighbours – a family of four – were routinely bothered at all hours, even in the middle of the night, by Thomas’s loud radio programs. When they complained to him, Thomas would not change his behaviour, so more serious measures had to be taken to ensure peace would prevail.

Did you Know?

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Blood type: Lots of people give blood at blood donor clinics in the hope that they can help someone in need. Ideally, donated blood is matched to the recipient, but in an emergency when time is a factor, Type O blood can generally be given to anyone.
Twain’s legacy: Prolific American writer, Mark Twain, who died in 1910, did not see all of his books published while he was still alive. For example, “The Mysterious Stranger” came out in 1916. He also wrote “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” (1876) and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” (1884).
Rebuilding: Phuket is an island of Thailand which is connected to the mainland via two bridges. This popular tourist destination was severely damaged by the December 26, 2004 tsunami. A year later, resorts were back in business as the area slowly returned to normal.
Knowing colour: There is colour, and then there is colour! Take vermilion, for example. Some might call it red, but it is so vibrant that it has its own name. Vermilion can be described as a vivid reddish orange shade.
