Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Pig fun: Pigs have long been known to be intelligent animals, but a farmer in the Netherlands has found out that they like to have fun, too! Erik Stegink wanted to find a way for his pigs to amuse themselves, so he bought an old slide from a neighbour. He then installed the slide so the pigs could take a fun ride, not into a pool of water, but into a pool of mud. The setup allows the pigs to cool down in the hot summer months. This is important because, although pigs have a few sweat glands, they’re not very useful for temperature adjustments and a mud bath tends to keep their internal temperatures down.

Hale and hearty: Burglars in Botley, England, are advised to stay away from the home of Frank and Margaret Corti. Frank, an ex-Royal Engineer with the British Army, still knows how to defend himself, even though he is well into his seventies. Gregory McCalium, who is only in his twenties, attempted to break into the couple’s home, but was jumped by the older man. Corti managed to knock the intruder down, then restrain him until police arrived. For his part, McCalium said he couldn’t remember the break-in due to his intoxicated state, but a judge sentenced him to over four years in prison for his criminal behaviour.

Act of kindness: Canadians are known to be friendly and caring and a motorcyclist in Victoria, British Columbia (CAN), kept that spirit alive with an act of kindness. His kind act was caught on film and has since gone viral on YouTube. The biker was touring happily down a city street when he noticed a woman in a wheelchair who seemed to be stuck. Instead of ignoring the situation and driving by, the man pulled over, parked his bike, then lifted the woman and her wheelchair out of a patch of dirt. The woman thanked him and the biker told her to “have a good one” before driving off again.

Not child’s play: Sand lovers might want to visit Copenhagen, Denmark, during the summer months. That is when some of the most talented sand sculptors from around the world descend upon the city to make marvelous works of art using sand as their medium. Everything from busts of people and polar bears to fantasy castles emerge and some of the sculptures can be as much as 32 feet (10 metres) in height. Their work is intricate and thought-provoking, and the artists aren’t just children using plastic shovels. Instead, they use specialized tools to carve out an image from tonnes of sand. The finished products are truly sights to behold.
