Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Mystery theft: When thieves break into cars, it’s usually to steal the camera left in the back seat or the purse in the front. Either that, or they steal the car itself. Not so for a vehicle owner in Winnipeg, Manitoba (CAN). When Bobby Willmer was getting ready for work one morning he discovered the trunk lid missing on his Chevrolet Cavalier. Turns out that, in the middle of the night, a neighbour had looked out his window just in time to see two teens bicycling down the darkened street carrying the trunk lid between them. The police were called, but by that time, the thieves were long gone. The purpose of the theft is a mystery to this day.

Drainpipe dreams: Anyone looking for inexpensive accommodations while visiting Austria should check out the Das Park Hotel in Ottensheim – but only if you don’t mind sleeping in a concrete drainpipe. While this sounds a bit odd, it is actually an interesting concept. The brainchild of Andreas Strauss, these one-room drainpipes are set on the edge of a park and can be booked on-line. Users open the concrete door by inputting a supplied code on a digital keypad. Inside is a comfortable bed, a lamp and a wall mural created by an Austrian artist. Communal washrooms are a short walk away, and guests pay what they can afford for a three-day maximum stay.

Bunny suit: People who wear bunny suits usually do so for a legitimate reason. Perhaps they are a mascot for a sports team or a juggler in a community parade. However, a man in Idaho Falls in Idaho (US) had no justifiable explanation for hopping around in public wearing a rabbit costume. Rather than being entertaining, William Falkingham actually scared children because his behaviour seemed too off-kilter. For example, he would hide behind trees and peek out at kids, prompting one mother to call the police. Neighbours who know him, however, claim he’s just a bit eccentric and actually has a good heart.

Sweet blaze: Fires in warehouses have been known to damage many different types of goods, from furniture to machinery and from building material to tools. But in a blaze, which started in two warehouses in Santa Adelia, Brazil, it was a river of melted sugar that went up in flames. The company that owned the warehouses claimed that 28 thousand tonnes of sugar was lost, but luckily, it was all insured. Firefighters from all over the area came to help put the fire out, a task that took three days and involved constructing dikes out of earth that were used to surround the flaming sugar. No one was hurt, but it was quite a spectacle.

Tiny bird: Hummingbirds come in very small sizes, but none as small as the bee hummingbird of Cuba. This smallest bird in the world is only about five or six centimetres (2–2.4 inches) long and weighs less than three grams (0.11 ounces).

Staying dry: Watching the behaviour of ants can often help to predict the weather. If a rainstorm is coming, the worker ants will go back to their anthill. The last one in will cover the hole so no rain gets in.

Stone tools: Large numbers of stone tools have been found by archaeologists that date back to an era known as The Stone Age. The era lasted for about 3.4 million years and ended between 6000 BC and 2000 BC, when metalworking began.

Long shot: Photography got its start in the mid-1820s when French inventor Nicéphore Niépce figured out how to take a picture of a courtyard. The exposure time was eight hours, more than the milliseconds of today’s cameras!

Ice caps: One would think that the equator would be too warm for glaciers, but that is incorrect. For example, some mountains along the equator, such as Chimborazo in Ecuador and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, have glaciers.
