Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Fish story: Jan Bailey of Vancouver, British Columbia (CAN) couldn’t believe her eyes when she noticed a fish fall out of a cedar tree. It was even more surprising to find that it was still alive. After getting the fish into a tank of water, Bailey and a couple of friends did some research and discovered that the fish is a Midas cichlid, which is native to Central and South America. No one knows how the fish could have ended up in a tree, but one explanation is that it may have come from an outdoor pond and was taken and dropped in the tree by an eagle.

Phone furor: People with lots of money in the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates get the chance to bid on desirable phone numbers. However, these are not your everyday numbers. For example, who wouldn’t want the phone number 777-7777? Well, a lucky bidder paid the phone company the equivalent of $2.1 million (US) for the opportunity. Another bidder paid $340,000 for 777-7770. However, the bidders don’t get those numbers for life; instead, they get a two-year contract. Along with the coveted numbers, bidders receive lots of minutes and text messaging and a good data plan.

Phone problem: Cell phones have become so important that people will go to great lengths to locate one if it is missing. A case in point is a teenager from Kent, England. Ella Birchenough had her cell phone stowed in a pocket, but it fell out just as she was walking over a sewer grate. Birchenough thought she might be able to retrieve the phone, so she jumped down into the sewer to try to find it. However, she found herself waist-deep in water and couldn’t get back out. Her mom called firefighters for help and they rescued both Ella and her cell phone, but, unfortunately, the phone got broken in the ordeal.

Dog lover: Recently, there was a big dog competition in which premium pets were on exhibit in Tongxiang which is located in China’s Zhejiang’s Province. Among the pets for sale was a Tibetan Mastiff pup, a breed that many say resembles a lion (mane and all). This breed of dog grows to a height of up to 72 centimetres (2 feet 4 inches) and a weight of up to 82 kilograms (180 pounds). The animal sold for 12 million yuan ($1.9 million US) and was purchased by a property developer. A purebred Tibetan Mastiff is very intelligent and loyal, but also very rare, hence the high price.
