Clean streets: Big cities are often thought to be dirty, smog-filled locales. However, there are some large metropolises that are quite clean. For example, Singapore in Southeast Asia has strict littering laws, so very little garbage can be found in its streets. As well, car owners must pay high taxes, discouraging automobile use and therefore reducing smog. Half a world away from Singapore, another city that’s known for its cleanliness is the Canadian city of Calgary, Alberta. That city issues high fines for littering and offers a campaign to educate people about recycling and composting.
Saving Kitty: Pit bulls might not have the greatest reputation, but one named Jack might change the way people view this breed of dog. Owned by Sherree Lewis of Seminole, Florida (US), Jack is a rescue animal, as is the family’s cat, Kitty. One day Kitty went out to the back yard and, to Lewis’ horror, was attacked by two coyotes. Lewis thought the feline was a goner, that is, until Jack came tearing out of the house in the nick of time. The coyotes dropped Kitty and Jack scared off the intruders. Kitty endured some injuries, but survived the ordeal. Kitty and Jack are now inseparable pals.
Big sinkhole: Usually, a sinkhole is quickly repaired by a maintenance crew to prevent cars from being swallowed up. Not so for a sinkhole in the city of Bowling Green, Kentucky (US). That is the home of the National Corvette Museum where a portion of the display area collapsed, taking eight vintage cars with it. The cars were damaged quite badly. However, the presence of the sinkhole attracted more visitors to the museum, so the board of directors voted to keep part of it as an attraction. They may even put a couple of crumpled cars into the hole for effect.
Hot sauce: Those who enjoy hot chicken drumsticks should seek out the Bindi Restaurant in Lincolnshire, England, where Chef Muhammed Karim makes his hot sauce recipe while wearing a gas mask. The sauce is definitely not for the faint of heart. It contains peppers known for their intensity such as the Moruga Scorpion and the Carolina Reaper. The chef keeps his sauce in a locked area so no one will accidentally eat it. Karim makes interested eaters sign a waiver, but he’ll also pay £100 ($170 US) to anyone who manages to eat 10 hot chicken drumsticks in 15 minutes or less. Very few have met that challenge!

Salad fruit: Physalis is a small orange fruit similar in shape and size to a tiny tomato. However, a physalis has a papery covering that resembles a little lantern. This fruit is common in Mexico and is often used in salads.
High fortress: There is a mountaintop fortress on the Caribbean Island of Haiti called Citadelle Laferrière which was built in the early 1800s by 20,000 workers. It was originally constructed to guard against French invasions, which never occured.
First pencils: Pencils are enclosed in a casing of wood because the graphite inside is soft. When pencils were first made in the 1500s, the sticks of graphite were wrapped in string or sheepskin to prevent them from breaking.
Good musician: British musician Mick Jagger plays harmonica, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar and drums, but is probably best known for his voice as lead singer in the famous rock band, “The Rolling Stones.”
