Everybody’s Talking

All aboard! Frank and Irma Appel had an idea for a hotel and, weird as it may seem, they made their dream come true. Their hotel is located on their farm property near Hoogwoud, a village in Holland. Controversy Inn has become a destination for curious customers. The hotel is made from three old tramcars and one railway car which were once used in Germany and Amsterdam. The Appels have converted these cars into comfortable rooms and added decorations with a different country theme for each car: America, Italy, France and Mexico.

Slow moving robber: A thief who robbed a bank in Halifax, Nova Scotia (CAN) didn’t get very far, probably because he didn’t have a getaway car. The man who claimed to have a gun, held up a teller. Money was handed over and the man walked out of the bank. Someone called the police saying that the man had been seen a few blocks away, sauntering down the street. It wasn’t hard to identify him because he was caught on the film of the bank’s camera wearing a distinctive shirt and ball cap.

Inland beach: Playa de Gulpiyuri is a beach near the town of Llanes in Spain that is located in a meadow 328 ft. from the Cantabrian Sea. It even has sand and waves. The water emerges from an outcrop of rock and spills onto the land. It seems magical, but there is an explanation. Over time, sea water worked its way through the earth, making underground tunnels that emerge at the little beach. The water is cold though, as it comes from underground. The government of Spain has declared the beach a national monument.

Really stuck: Getting stuck in the mud is not usually something to be fearful of during a photography expedition. However, that is exactly what happened to two Americans when they were visiting the state of Alaska (US). John Prince and William Shannon were trying to get some good photos of an eagle near Kalifornsky Beach Road, south of the city of Anchorage. They walked onto some mud flats, sank to their waists and could not move. Luckily, they were rescued by emergency services personnel before the tide came in.

Greek cheese: Feta cheese comes only from certain regions of Greece. It is made from the milk of sheep or from a combination of sheep’s milk and goat’s milk. Similar cheeses may be made from cow’s milk, but in Greece, those would not be considered to be genuine feta cheese.

Deep canyon: The Grand Canyon is truly a grand geological landmark in Arizona (US) and is visited by thousands of tourists each year. It is 446 kilometres (277 miles) long and 1,800 metres (6,000 feet) deep. The Colorado River runs through it.
