Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Yo-yoing for fun: There is a club in the Canadian city of Vancouver, British Columbia, that’s fun for all. It’s the Vancouver YoYo Club where members can learn new yo-yo tricks. If they get really good at it, members can always compete at national championships. Today’s yo-yos have changed a lot due to the special materials available today. Think ball-bearing axles, for example! That means the “sleeper” competition, in which the yo-yo rotates at the end of the string, can rotate for 30 minutes, compared to about one minute using old-fashioned yo-yos. We’ve come a long way!

To the rescue: A police officer had to act fast in Spooner, Wisconsin (US). Part-time officer Adam Brunclik was driving his police car while on duty. As he approached an intersection, he noticed a shopping cart rolling very quickly out of a store’s parking lot and toward a busy street. Unfortunately, a baby was strapped into the cart’s child seat. Knowing he didn’t have time to jump out and stop the cart, Brunclik turned on his flashing lights and positioned the cruiser so traffic could not reach the cart. It was a life-saving action and the child’s mother was very grateful.

Big shoe: A man in Branddraai, South Africa, took his wife’s request seriously. She wanted him to build her a shoe. Artist Ron Van Zyl went to work and created a house-size shoe for wife Yvonne by carving it out of wood. Unfortunately, it is not possible to live in the shoe, like the woman in the nursery rhyme, but it is open for visitors to come and take a look. It has become somewhat of a tourist attraction in the region where people can stop for a snack, an overnight stay at the owners’ hotel nearby, or enjoy a stroll around the grounds. Bronze and wood carvings are also on sale in the gift shop.

Cheetah on top: When on a safari in Africa, it is probably best to keep the windows of your vehicle closed in case a hungry lion is in the vicinity. However, photographer Marc Mol broke the rules while in Tanzania when a year-old cheetah cub came over to investigate. Not only did the cub sniff the car, but he also jumped up onto the roof and stuck his head down through the sunroof. Mol claims that the breath of the cub actually steamed up the lens of his camera. On subsequent visits to the area, the cub came back to check them out again.
