Amazing Slime:
Toshiuki Nakagaki, a professor at Future University Hakodate in northern Japan, has discovered that, even though it doesn’t have a brain, slime mold has the ability to find its way out of a maze. Nakagaki claims his studies show that slime mold is able to organize its cells to find the fastest way to a food source. Its information processing abilities are similar to that of a human and are more sophisticated than any computer. The professor used slime mold for his experiments because of previous research, which revealed that the substance becomes inactive when stressed by temperature changes and is able to remember and anticipate a reoccurrence of that situation.
Mandatory Snacks:
In George Parrot’s psychology class at Sacramento State University in California, students must bring a snack. It’s mandatory. Students have learned that lesson the hard way because Parrot walks out of class if one of them doesn’t bring a snack. For 39 years, Parrot has been making snacks a requirement in his classes. He does this because he believes it encourages students to work collectively and inspires them to interact. He explains that having snacks in class also breaks the ice and lessens students’ stress. At the beginning of the school year, the professor gives his class a list of recommended healthy snacks.
Ice Cream Bonanza:
Merida, Venezuela, is home to an ice cream shop called Heladeria Coromoto, where on any given day visitors can choose from up to 60 flavours of ice cream. The shop actually has a menu of 900 flavours, which are rotated according to the season. Owner Manuel de Silva Oliveira worked at large ice cream companies and, with that experience, figured there was a market for exotic flavours. This may help explain the rare varieties of ice cream available in his shop. For example, one of the most popular is avocado paired with sweet corn, black bean, mango, or coconut flavours. Other choices include beef, onion, mushroom, garlic, wine, and cheese.
Doll the Hero:
For high school students, taking a turn caring for a baby doll that simulates crying is part of the family life curriculum. In Tennessee, it was also the thing that saved a family’s life. Kathy Tyson, spokeswoman for the city of La Vergne, tells the story of a teenager, normally a heavy sleeper, who had to get up because the doll was crying. She went to the back of the house because she thought she heard a plate breaking. When she opened the door, she was hit by a wall of smoke. The sound had been that of a window breaking. She quickly woke her mother and stepfather and the three escaped unharmed.
