Everybody’s Talking

Stampede: Janice Woodland, a crossing guard at Alderman Jacobs Primary School in Whittlesey, England, saw six horses stampeding down the street straight towards her. Only moments before she had been guiding children across the street. She was frightened to see the horses coming toward her, but at the last minute she was able to guide them through an open gate and into a garden where they were confined until the police arrived. She admits that it was a shocking scene to witness, especially as some of the animals were rearing up. Woodland claims to have helped dogs and cats cross the street, but never horses.
Memory loss: A psychology professor from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana reports that walking through doors can cause memory lapses. According to Gabriel Radvansky, this happens because doorways serve as event boundaries and cause the brain to separate information. He explains that a decision made in one room is difficult to remember in the next room because it’s been compartmentalized. He tested his theory using experiments involving his students. Each time, subjects forgot more after walking through a doorway, or event boundary, which he claims impedes their ability to retrieve thoughts or decisions made in the first room.
Ambassador to Mars: No one knows if the planet Mars can sustain life, but if it’s ever discovered to be possible, then the state of Delaware is ready to promote political relations with the beings that live there. Delaware Governor Jack Markell has appointed Dr. Noureddine Melikechi as the “Ambassador to Mars.” Melikechi, vice president of research at Delaware State University, received this honour because of his work with NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory which is searching for life on Mars. Markell would like Melikechi to be ready to tell the Martians that Delaware has an excellent workforce and great research facilities, and that it would be a great state to settle in.
Wrong call: Pushpa Udenia is a teacher in a private school in Bhopal, India. She was a game show contestant who won big money, but in the process, lost her job. That’s because when she was stuck for an answer and opted to use her ‘call a friend lifeline,’ she allegedly chose the wrong person to call. Apparently, one of the people on her friend list was the father of the principal of the school where she worked. Udenia says because she didn’t call the principal’s father, he fired her from her job. “He didn’t say why I was removed, but the other teachers say he was angry that I didn’t call his father,” she alleges.
