More minutes, please: A group of people out boating on a lake in Manitoba, Canada, learned never to let a cell phone run out of minutes. The foursome’s boat broke down and drifted to an isolated island. One of the boaters had a cell phone, but it ran out of minutes in the middle of her call for help. After searching the area to no avail, police asked the telephone company to add minutes to the woman’s phone. The company agreed, a call was made to the stranded group, and police were then able to locate them and arrange for their rescue.
Leap year party: Anthony, Texas (US), has become known as the Leap Year Capital of the World. The idea came in 1988 from a local resident named Mary Ann Brown, whose birthday is on February 29. She convinced the town’s Chamber of Commerce to sponsor the Worldwide Leap Year Festival, which has evolved into a week-long carnival with all sorts of activities, such as live music, a golf tournament, barbecues and hot air balloon rides. There is also a Worldwide Leap Year Birthday Club which invites anyone born on February 29 to become a member.
Expensive flight: Passengers on a Comtel Air flight from Amritsar, India to Birmingham, England had to pay a little extra to ensure they’d get home. Passenger Reena Rindi reports that the plane landed in Vienna, Austria, to refuel. It was during that stop that the people on board were asked to help pay for the fuel. As they had been stranded for three days and were desperate to get home, most agreed to pitch in to pay the $31,000 needed for the fuel. Passengers who didn’t have cash were escorted to a cash machine by airline staff to make a withdrawal. ‘Unresolved financial questions’ was the reason given for the strange incident.
Crash landing: A restaurant in Penn Hills, Pennsylvania (US), had an unusual intruder that was discovered by police responding to the building’s alarm system. The intruder was a wild turkey and, in an almost comical twist, it was found on Thanksgiving Day – the day when most Americans feast on roasted turkey. Perhaps the bird was trying to escape the oven? Penn Hills police officer Bernard Sestili says the 15-pound turkey crashed through the restaurant window and was found among the broken glass. The restaurant was closed at the time because of the holiday. No word on whether the turkey made it into someone’s roasting pan.
