Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Young hero: Ryker Maenhout was only two years old when he dialed 911 and saved his mother’s life. The child from Barrie, Ontario, Canada, is older now and can tell people, “I saved my mom.” For his heroics, he received a 911 Youth Award. Lisa Quist, the boy’s mother, was using a riding lawnmower when it stalled and started rolling down a hill. She jumped off, but got caught between the machine and a tree and couldn’t escape. She yelled to Ryker to dial 911, which he did. “He’s amazing,” says Quist, who broke a few bones in the incident.

Coffee’s ready: In Turin, Italy, Fiat has launched its Fiat 500L model that comes complete with a built-in espresso coffee machine as an accessory. The car manufacturer worked with Lavazza, a famous Italian coffee-machine maker, to design a system that integrates into the passenger compartment, next to the gear shift. It comes with a sugar container, Pod dispenser, and a spoon. The company claims that this is the first car in the world that comes with its own espresso maker. The car costs about $24,000 (U.S.) and buyers will pay about $300 (U.S.) more if they choose to include the coffee maker.

Colourful lobsters: Lobsters are greenish-brown in colour, but these days some in Atlantic Canada and in New England increasingly seem to be more colourful – bright blue, yellow, white, and even two-coloured. Bill Sarro, owner of Fresh Catch Seafood in Mansfield, Massachusetts, knows this first-hand. A recent shipment of 100 pounds of fresh lobster included six that were bright orange. Sarro reported that at first, he thought the lobsters were already cooked, which turns them bright orange, but the catch arrived alive and crawling. Theories about the phenomenon include the fact that more lobsters are being caught these days and that cell phone cameras make it easier to share news of brightly coloured ones.

Strong magnet: A family in Northamptonshire, England, was amazed to find their pet hamster, Smurf, stuck to the metal bars of its cage, seemingly unable to move. They weren’t sure what the problem was at first, then Kate Meech realized her children’s pet had chewed a tiny magnet that had enough power to hold the creature tight to the cage. The magnet had come off one of the children’s toys and it was firmly wedged in Smurf’s cheek. Meech managed to rescue the hamster and eventually the magnet was dislodged. Smurf survived the ordeal with no lasting effects.
