Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Garlicky fare: If you don’t mind garlic breath on yourself or your dinner companion, a trip to The Stinking Rose in San Francisco, California (US) is in order. The Stinking Rose is a restaurant that serves lots of garlic in nearly all of its dishes. Examples include garlic-braised short ribs, Italian garlic meatloaf and a chicken dish that includes 40 cloves of garlic per serving. The restaurant even puts garlic in some of its drinks. As well as appearing in the food that it serves, garlic is also part of the restaurant’s decor which features garlic memorabilia and long garlic braids that hang from the ceiling.

Gull attack: Most people take an umbrella with them if it looks like it might rain. For folks who live in the Scottish village of Newhaven, however, umbrellas are needed to ward off seagulls. The gulls become overly protective during nesting season and they tend to swoop down on people to ensure that their young are safe. Using an umbrella is a good defence, but the Royal Mail delivery sometimes has to be suspended for a few days because its mail carriers aren’t prepared for the phenomenon. Authorities try to help by distributing information about deterring gulls from nesting close to homes.

High up: Generally, only a qualified operator is allowed entry into the control room of a crane. However, those traveling to Harlingen, Holland, could book an entire night on one. A crane at this dockside town, not far from Amsterdam, has been converted into a luxurious one-room hotel. It is complete with bed, shower and a glorious view of the area through the original windows and the observation deck. The crane even has an elevator to transport guests to their room. If so inclined, guests can even operate the crane, taking it for a 360 degree spin.

Ride with the bulls: There is a sport in Pakistan that is quite exciting for both the contestants and for the spectators. It’s called bovine racing and here’s how it works. A contestant stands on a wooden board which is attached to two bulls that pull the board along a 1,150 ft. course. These “jockeys” must also attempt to guide the bulls through two poles on the course. If the contestant falls off the board, or if the bulls don’t go through the two poles, the contestant is disqualified. These races usually take place in tandem with rural festivals and they attract many spectators.
