Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Fast runner: Janet Lamb of Tunbridge Wells in England raises chickens. She also has several rheas, which are flightless birds that resemble the ostrich, but are smaller. The youngest rhea on the farm, named Baby, was discovered missing one morning when Lamb woke up. She soon learned that travelers in the area had reported sightings of a “killer” ostrich speeding along the roadways. Baby had wandered off the property and decided to run off a little steam on the highway. Eventually, the runaway was caught by a neighbour and returned home to Lamb’s farm.

S-s-scary: After visitors to the Canadian city of Niagara Falls have viewed the thunderous waterfall, they might want to check out a different kind of tourist attraction, The Nightmare’s Fear Factory. Thought to be one of the oldest running haunted houses in North America, it provides a scary tour and its website posts photos of terrified visitors to prove it. Those brave enough to enter are greeted with costumed live actors who scream, growl and poke at the patrons. It’s dark, eerie and creepy, but if anyone wants out, all they have to do is utter the word “nightmares,” and they will be safely led to an exit.

Downed cyclist: Police in the country of Belarus in Eastern Europe wanted people to start paying attention to others who may be in trouble. In a campaign called “Don’t Look the Other Way,” officers placed a wrecked bicycle at a roadside. A dummy that looked like an injured cyclist was placed beside it. Police were a little disappointed in the response from travelers, as most of them drove by without stopping. However, several concerned drivers did stop to ask if they could help, and those who did received a gift for their concern. The campaign to raise awareness about safety took place on a busy highway which is often used by cyclists.

Sandy sculptures: People were able to view some exquisite sand sculptures in the South American country of Colombia, but they were not on the beach. Instead, they were found in a large exhibition space in the mountain city of Colombia. These were not ordinary sand castles. Rather, they were works of art created by sculptors from around the world. Among the amazing pieces, which were made from pressed sand and water, were the Statue of Liberty, an astronaut waiting for blast-off, an array of mythical creatures and the Eiffel Tower.

Island state: Australia’s island state of Tasmania is located 240 kilometres (150 miles) south of the southeast corner of Australia. It consists of one large island, along with 334 surrounding islands.

Fabric choices: There are many different types of fabrics available. For example, spandex, rayon and nylon are three kinds of synthetic fabric, while alpaca, angora and cashmere are all wool or wool-like fabrics.

Brown or blue? Eye colour is the result of melanin, which is a pigment that is also responsible for hair and skin colour. The more melanin, and the closer it is to the surface of the iris, the darker the eye colour.

Evergreens: The foliage of cedar and juniper trees differs from that of other evergreens. They have clusters of small, flat, scale-like leaves. Other evergreens, such as the pine and spruce, have needles that can be quite sharp.
