Everybody’s Talking

┈┈┈┈┈☟┈┈┈┈┈

Shiny cars: In Dubai, Saudi Arabia, fancy cars, such as the Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche, are common. Therefore, owners of these luxurious vehicles search hard to find ways to make their cars really stand out. A company in that city has found a unique way to do just that. The owners of Coin Car polish thousands of out-of-circulation coins and glue them to the exterior of the vehicles. It takes weeks of hard work to complete one car, but results in a very shiny and distinctive product. The labour costs to do this is quite high, but it’s doubtful that the owners of these expensive vehicles would need to worry about that.
Spectacular jump: Russian Valery Rozov is a real daredevil. He had the nerves of steel necessary to jump off the north face of Mount Everest from an altitude of 7,220 metres (over 23,000 ft.). Accompanied by four Sherpas, it took Rozov four days to ascend from the Mount Everest base camp to the jumping spot. Rozov’s two years of preparation paid off. Wearing a specialized wingsuit, he did a free fall for a few seconds, soared for nearly a minute, then opened his parachute, which enabled him to land safely on a glacier. Rozov has participated in many other extreme stunts, including jumping into an active volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East.
Wooden car: A farm worker from Tiszaors, Hungary, took on a little project during the long days of winter. He built a car primarily made out of wood. Istvan Puskas worked for four months to create his unique vehicle and he plans to sell it to a collector. The car has a beer barrel for a fuel tank, while the frame, wheels, axles and gearbox are also wooden. Of course, he had to resort to using other materials for some parts, such as fan belts and tires. The engine came from a Fiat 126 that was made in Poland. Local authorities won’t register the car, but they’ll let Puskas drive around on local village lanes.
Fake cops: Traffic cops in the huge city of Bangalore, India were having a hard time controlling the behaviour of bad drivers because they didn’t have enough officers to patrol the streets. So, they came up with a unique solution; they started using fake police officers made out of cardboard. As they are life-sized photos of officers, the cardboard cut-outs look very realistic, especially from a distance. Drivers slow down as they mistake them for the real thing. So far, only a few have been used on busy corners, but the experiment has been so successful that more of the cut-outs are planned to be put into use in the future.

Pea genes: Gregor Johann Mendel was the first to identify dominant and recessive traits in his experiments with peas. Mendel was a monk who was interested in science. He was born in 1822 in what is now the Czech Republic.
