Long snake: Burmese pythons are not native to Florida (US), but one family and their tour guides discovered that these big snakes are, indeed, present in the Everglades. The family of four was on a canoe trip with guides Tommy Owens and Warren Wortman. When the 10-foot snake was spotted, Owens jumped into the water and wrestled with it. At first, Owens thought he was going to lose the battle, but eventually the snake tired and became subdued. The guides took the creature to the Big Cypress National Preserve for observation.
No respect: Stealing is one thing, but stealing from your own mother is quite another. A young woman from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, England, found out the hard way that committing such a crime isn’t worth it. Kirsty Foord received an 18-week suspended sentence for stealing gold jewelry from her mom, but she also lost her mother’s respect. Foord wanted to get some tattoos, but didn’t have the cash, so she raided her mother’s jewelry box. She sold the jewelry to a pawn shop which had them melted down, and raised £2,277 (about $3,500 US) for Foord. She then spent the money at the tattoo parlour.
Generous girl: For Jenna Jensen, a young girl from Calgary, Alberta in Canada, birthdays are more about giving than receiving. When she was just two-years-old, Jenna had a problem with her kidneys and required an operation to have one removed. During that difficult time, the Kidney Foundation of Canada helped her out. Now that she’s a little older, she has decided she wants something different for her birthday. Rather than birthday gifts, Jensen wants to receive home-made cards with donations to the Foundation. On her last birthday she raised $200, which will help support other Canadians affected by kidney disease. Jenna’s generosity has inspired her friends to do the same for their own charities.
Homey brunch spot: There is a restaurant in Toronto in Ontario, Canada, where city dwellers can reminisce about their camping experiences. In fact, the eatery is called Camp Restaurant and it serves the kind of things that one might cook over a campfire. Here, though, the sausage and scrambled eggs, as well as the many other delicious brunch dishes, are actually prepared using modern appliances. The place has a homey feel to it, with beaver-themed artwork on the walls and Muskoka chairs outside. Camp is owned by Megan White, who renovated the first floor of her home for the venture. She and her family live upstairs.
